There's a good bit of coverage of Ranelagh businesses in yesterday's Sunday Business Post - Helen Turkington is profiled, there's word from Dylan McGrath on why Mint closed, and there's a story about GMale, run by Gavan and Joe Glynn. The Glynns clearly know their audience:

"an Xbox is available to play at reception, while beer is offered in the afternoon and sports generally feature on GMale’s plasma screens."

Mint Restaurant Closes

There's some coverage on the Herald of the closure of Mint, Ranelagh's top-rated restaurant, and a bit of speculation as to who to blame. Interesting material, and of course, there's the question of whether the next business in that premises will survive long - I've seen three different businesses in there, as well as a period when it was unoccupied.

Bistro Bianconi Chef to enter World Championships

Bistro Bianconi's Fran Carroll is to enter the world pizza championships in Las Vegas. Apparently, his entry is the Jameson & Black Pizza,

"An unlikely combination of Jameson Whiskey, Clonakilty black pudding, Cashel blue cheese, bacon and apple"

If that makes it to the menu in Bistro Bianconi, I'll be trying it. If it doesn't, I may have to try making it myself...

Tree Down

There's a fine image of a tree down in Ranelagh Gardens in Speak from the Hip. It's been a long time since I've seen trees coming down in Ranelagh, but since this winter's weather has been a lot colder and windier than the last few, I suppose it's not surprising.

Ranelagh Balloon Flight & Pearse Schools

There are two Ranelagh mentions in the Irish Times today. One concerns Patrick Pearse's legacy as an educator, with regard to the school in Cullenswood House, and the other is an entry in the Irishman's Diary column about the unveiling of a statue in Ranelagh Gardens to commemorate the balloon launch there in 1785 by a fellow called Richard Crosbie.

Pint & A Picture

Howard Linane's Pint & A Picture returns to Ranelagh today, the 1st of September, with highlights including Yellow Gate Women (and a Q&A with the director) and Happiness, and by the sound of things, a lot more as well. That's in Russell’s of Ranelagh from 7pm onwards.

Ranelagh Arts Festival 2008

The programme has been announced for the Ranelagh Arts Festival 2008. The festival takes place from the 23rd of September, at various venues around Ranelagh. From the announcement:

"This year, the emphasis is on the village, with loads of events around Ranelagh, making the festival hard to ignore. Walking tours, cycling tours, comedy circuits, an art exhibition that will loop around the village, street art and a magnificent engine puffing away on the Triangle – yes, folks, you are going to see plenty of activity."

Last year's festival was a great success, and it looks like this year's is going to be even better.

Charleston Road Listed Building

The Dublin People has an article up about the entry of 34 Charleston Road on the Record of Protected Structures. It seems the owner wasn't correctly notified when the building was listed, and in any case, says that the house has "no particular architectural merit; that there was no historical association with a famous person or event; that it was not part of an interesting group of buildings; that it did not illustrate any point of social or economic history and that it was not built with any technological innovation or virtuosity."

Dublin City Council seem to differ.

Post Office Moves to Centra

Dermot Lacey posts on his blog that the Post Office in Ranelagh is moving to Centra on the Triangle. Good news in convenience for everyone, I think.

O'Gara Claims Intention To Build

According to the Herald, Noel O'Gara intends to build a house in Dartmouth Square in Ranelagh. He claims that a "loophole" exists in the law concerning planning permission, which means he doesn't have to get it. However, unless he intends to build it himself, I suspect he'll have a tough time finding builders.

Starbucks in Ranelagh

According to the Irish Independent, there's going to be a branch of Starbucks opening in Ranelagh. They're looking to expand to a London level, where you're never more than 10 minutes from a branch. If they start to use the late opening times that they have in the UK and the US, I can see this being a roaring success for them.

There have been a number of changes to Ranelagh's shopping and other businesses in the last few months. Most notable is probably the opening of a new Superquinn just off the Triangle. Opposite that, Centra have moved into where McDonalds used to be, and the old space is being renovated to combine the two into one huge convenience store. Diep Noodle Bar have expanded with a new takeaway branch, Diep at Home, and best of all, Michie Sushi are now doing deliveries.

O'Gara Strikes Again

Noel O'Gara's latest action, according to Midlands Radio is to allow Dartmouth Square to be used as a halting site by a family of travellers.

the Circuit Court has ordered that the caravan and generator on the site be removed immediately. O' Gara is fighting the court order, saying he has done nothing wrong.

I really cannot imagine what O'Gara is getting out of all this.

McDonalds in Ranelagh Closes

The branch of McDonalds just off the Triangle in Ranelagh has closed. There appear to be plans to expand the Centra next door into that space, which I think will more than double its size. Anyone know anything more about that closure, or what happened with the other chip shop on the Triangle?

Dartmouth Square

There's a report on RTE about more activity from Noel O'Gara in Dartmouth Square, one of the nicer parks in the Ranelagh area. O'Gara has been selling tiles from the park, which he owns, having bought it for a small amount of money in 2005, intending to develop it. It's currently in the process of being bought out by Dublin City Council under a compulsory purchase order.

Personally, I can't see what he expects to gain from it, apart from some more hatred from the local residents...
